Rehenesh played an pivotal role in Jamshedpur FC’s historic ISL shield winning campaign of the 2021-2022 season. His agility and the leadership in the defense line were crucial, having kept six clean sheets and made some notable saves. Overall, Rehenesh featured in 76 matches in all competitions wearing the colours of Jamshedpur, blanking the sheet on 24 occasions. To date, these add up to 132 outings in the Indian Super League.
The boy from Calicut, Rehenesh’s journey as a professional footballer began at Golden Threads FC where he played in the second division of the I-League before breaking into topflight football with Chirag United Kerala. Along the way, he honed his skills at clubs like Mumbai Tigers, Rangdajied United, ONGC FC before joining the ISL bandwagon with the NorthEast United FC. He played over 200 games in his professional career which spans over 12 years and had kept fifty-nine clean sheets.
Despite his undeniable talent and reflexes, Rehenesh has occasionally been susceptible to unforced errors. There were some questions rased about the decisions he took on field during his tenure at Kerala Blasters after moving from NorthEast United FC. Indian Football followers may recall the incident where he gifted the opening goal to Rafael Crivellaro during a Chennaiyin FC away match against the Blasters under Eelco Schattorie’s management.
The arrival of Rehenesh at Mumbai City FC will intensify competition for the spot of goalkeeper in the starting XI. Phurba Lachenpa, one of the best goal keepers of current generation in India, is already a strong contender for the Islanders. However, Rehenesh’s presence only adds strength to the team’s goalkeeping department thus giving Mumbai City an experienced back-up option.
At just 31 years old, Rehenesh has several good seasons ahead of him in top-tier football. Even though he will face stiff competition for the starting XI, this is an opportunity for him to decorate his portfolio with more silverware. As Mumbai City FC is a perennial contender, aiming for trophies across all competitions they participate in, Rehenesh’s experience and winning mentality will undoubtedly be valuable assets in this pursuit.
